Before Sleep

Invocations before sleep

1
Al-Baqarah (2:255)

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih. Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa Huwal-'Aliyyul-'Adhim.

Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them. And they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Virtue

Whoever recites it before sleeping, a guardian from Allah will protect him and Satan will not approach him that night.

Tafsir

Ayat Al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Quran. It affirms Allah's absolute sovereignty, His omniscience, and His permanent vigilance. Reciting it before sleep ensures the protection of a guardian from Allah throughout the night, preventing Satan from approaching the sleeper until they awake.

Sourate Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4)

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad. Allahus-Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ would blow into his hands while reciting the last three surahs, then wipe his hands over his entire body. To be recited 3 times with Al-Falaq and An-Nas.

Tafsir

Surah Al-Ikhlas equals one third of the Quran as it summarizes pure monotheism. The Prophet ﷺ recited it with Al-Falaq and An-Nas while blowing into his hands then wiping them over his body. This bedtime ritual is a spiritual purification and physical protection through the word of Allah.

Sourate Al-Falaq (113:1-5)

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Qul a'udhu bi-Rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of that which He created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ would blow into his hands while reciting the last three surahs, then wipe his hands over his entire body.

Tafsir

Surah Al-Falaq is a protection against the evils of the night: harmful creatures, darkness, sorcery, and envy. Reciting it before sleep is particularly relevant as nighttime is when these dangers are most present. The believer thus places himself entirely under the protection of his Lord.

Sourate An-Nas (114:1-6)

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Qul a'udhu bi-Rabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril-waswasil-khannas. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas. Minal-jinnati wan-nas.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind.

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ would blow into his hands while reciting the last three surahs, then wipe his hands over his entire body.

Tafsir

Surah An-Nas protects against the whisperings of Satan who seeks to lead people astray. Before sleep, a moment of vulnerability, this surah seals the believer's protection by invoking Allah through three of His attributes: Lord, King, and God of mankind.

Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)

Amanar-Rasulu bima unzila ilayhi mir-Rabbihi wal-mu'minun. Anta Mawlana fansurna 'alal-qawmil-kafirin.

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, saying: We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination. Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Virtue

Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.

Tafsir

These last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah express total submission to Allah and belief in all His messengers. They contain powerful supplications asking for forgiveness and relief from burdens. The Prophet ﷺ said they suffice whoever recites them at night, ensuring protection throughout their entire sleep.
