What Is Wudu?
Wudu (also spelled wudhu or wuzu) is the Islamic ritual purification of the body performed with water before prayer (salah). It is a prerequisite for the validity of prayer and certain other acts of worship.
Allah says in the Quran:
"O you who have believed, when you rise to pray, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows, and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles." (Al-Ma'idah, 5:6)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prayer is not accepted without purification." (Muslim)
Is Wudu Required Before Every Prayer?
Yes, wudu is required before each prayer unless your wudu from the previous prayer is still valid (i.e., you have not done anything that breaks it). You do not need to renew wudu between prayers if your purity is intact.
The 8 Steps of Wudu
Step 1 — Intention (Niyyah)
Make the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud — it is an act of the heart.
Step 2 — Say Bismillah
Begin by saying "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah). The Prophet said: "There is no wudu for the one who does not mention the name of Allah." (Abu Dawud)
Step 3 — Wash Both Hands (3 times)
Wash both hands up to and including the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers.
Step 4 — Rinse the Mouth (3 times)
Take water in the right hand, rinse the mouth thoroughly and spit it out. Do this three times.
Step 5 — Rinse the Nose (3 times)
Sniff water into the nostrils with the right hand and blow it out with the left hand. Do this three times.
Step 6 — Wash the Face (3 times)
Wash the entire face from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Men with beards should run wet fingers through the beard.
Step 7 — Wash the Arms (3 times)
Wash the right arm from the fingertips to and including the elbow, three times. Then repeat with the left arm.
Step 8 — Wipe the Head (once)
Wet both hands and wipe from the front of the head to the back, then bring the hands back to the front. Do this once.
Also wipe the ears: Insert the index fingers into the ear canals and wipe the outer ears with the thumbs — once.
Step 9 — Wash the Feet (3 times)
Wash the right foot up to and including the ankle three times, making sure water reaches between the toes. Repeat with the left foot.
The Dua After Wudu
After completing wudu, recite:
"Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Allahumma ij'alni minat-tawwabin waj'alni minal-mutatahhirin."
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves."
The Prophet said: "Whoever performs wudu and says this dua, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever he wishes." (Muslim)
What Breaks Wudu?
Wudu is invalidated by:
- Anything that exits from the private parts — urine, stool, gas, blood (from the private parts)
- Deep sleep — where one loses consciousness
- Loss of consciousness — fainting, intoxication
- Touching the private parts directly with the hand (according to some scholars)
Note: Bleeding from wounds, vomiting, and touching the opposite gender do not break wudu according to the stronger scholarly opinion.
Common Mistakes in Wudu
- Not washing the entire face (forgetting the hairline or chin area)
- Missing the elbows when washing the arms
- Not getting water between the toes
- Wiping the head multiple times (it is done only once)
- Forgetting Bismillah at the beginning
Tayammum — When Water Is Unavailable
If water is not available or its use would cause harm, tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth or dust) is a valid alternative. Allah says: "...and if you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands." (Al-Ma'idah, 5:6)
Conclusion
Wudu is more than ritual cleanliness — it is a spiritual preparation for standing before Allah in prayer. The Prophet said: "When a Muslim performs wudu and washes his face, every sin he committed with his eyes is washed away with the water. When he washes his hands, every sin he committed with his hands is washed away. When he washes his feet, every sin he walked toward is washed away — until he emerges purified from sins." (Muslim)
