Ihram - The State of Consecration

Ihram is the intention to enter into the rites of Hajj or Umrah. The pilgrim enters the state of consecration at the Miqat (designated place). He washes, perfumes his body (not his garments), and wears the two white cloths (Izar and Rida) for men.

Key points

  • Three types of Hajj: Ifrad (Hajj only), Tamattu' (Umrah then Hajj, most recommended), Qiran (Umrah and Hajj combined)
  • Perform Ghusl (major ablution) and perfume the body before Ihram
  • For men: wear two pieces of unsewn white cloth (Izar below, Rida above)
  • For women: regular covering clothes, without niqab or gloves
  • Prohibitions in Ihram: cutting hair/nails, wearing perfume, covering the head (men), wearing sewn garments (men), hunting, contracting marriage, conjugal relations
  • Formulate the intention (Niyyah) for the chosen type of Hajj
  • Pray 2 rak'at before entering Ihram (recommended)
